A Better Day

A documentation of creative vernacular displays produced in response to the COVID-19 lockdown in England during the Spring of 2020. Many of these displays developed spontaneously as new customs and rituals often showing support for the NHS and evoking a ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ Blitz spirt while providing activities for parent and child alike and brightening up the daily covid walks.

These images along with others collected during daily lockdown walks, formed the basis of a number of conference papers and a book chapter exploring popular responses to the Covid lockdown including:

'Creative Vernacular Interventions; a view from England' published in 'Behind the Mask: Vernacular Culture in the Time of COVID', ed: Bridges, Brillhart & Goldstein, Indiana University, 2023.

‘Tomorrow will be a better day - vernacular rainbow displays during the COVID-19 lockdown in Britain’, presented at 'Creativity during the Covid lockdown', The Sixth Joint Seminar of The Folklore Society and The Royal Anthropological Institute, October, 2021. See HERE

‘Vernacular Covid Customs and Creative Interventions in England - March – June 2020’, presented at 'Perspectives on Contemporary Legend', International Society for Contemporary Legend Research 38th International Conference, Tarragona, Spain, July 2021. See HERE.
